Summary
This article explains how to take a wheeze recording using the wheezo® device and the respiriTM app.
NOTE: We recommend doing the recording in a quiet area and to refrain from talking.
Instructions
A. Pair the wheezo device and the respiriTM smartphone app
- Remove wheezo®'s protective cap and press the power button to turn it ON by holding the power button down until the LED indicator flashes blue and white indicating it is ready to pair with your smart device.
- Pair your phone with the wheezo® device through Bluetooth. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. When already paired, the LED indicator will display solid blue. (Refer to How do I get wheezo into pairing mode if you need further assistance.)
You can also confirm if wheezo® is already paired by checking if the respiriTM app Wheeze recording screen shows ‘Connected’.
B. Record wheeze rate
Once the wheezo® device and respiriTM smartphone app are paired via Bluetooth, record the wheeze rate by following the steps below. It is recommended to do this in a quiet place and refrain from talking.
- The quickest way to record wheeze in the respiriTM mobile app is to use daily tasks.
Open the respiriTM app and from your home screen, the first card shows where you can record the wheeze rate. - Firmly hold the wheezo® device up against the windpipe (trachea) on the lower part of the neck.
- Tap Start recording on the app and keep breathing normally for 30 seconds. The rainbow on the app will fill up to provide feedback on progress. The app will then calculate the wheeze rate as a percentage of your breathing. Please note that immediately after a patient completes the wheeze recording, the file is automatically saved to the device and uploaded to the server if the device has an internet connection and if no connection, it will be uploaded once the device is connected to the internet.
Note: The rainbow is only for patients who are under 12 years of age. This is determined by what is entered in the user profile, and is based on date of birth. For user profiles greater than 12 years of age, users will be shown an ascending blue color visual (rather than the rainbow pictured below).
C. Recording other important details using the additional app features
- After wheeze has been recorded and you have tapped Next from the wheeze rate percentage screen, you will be shown the Symptoms screen where you can select symptoms experienced at the time or just prior to the recording.
You can select all applicable symptoms. And if what you are looking for is not there, you have the option to add by clicking the plus icon for Other and type the symptom in the free text field. Tap Next. - Next, the Triggers screen shows. Think about any triggers that may have caused the symptoms entered. You can select as many as you feel appropriate or just tap those that are the most applicable to you and you can add specific triggers not listed by clicking the plus icon for Other and type triggers in the free text field. Tap Next.
- Next you will be shown the summary page of the wheeze data recorded. Here, you can listen back to your breath sounds and review all the details recorded such as symptoms and triggers.
Individual pollen and air quality (or air irritant) levels along with the weather conditions are automatically logged with the breath sound recordings. Tap Save to complete the recording.

wheezo® is not intended for diagnostic use. wheezo® is intended to detect and record abnormal breath sounds (continuous adventitious breath sounds/CABS) at the windpipe (trachea), reported as WheezeRate in adults and children (2 years and older).
When used to monitor wheeze, the user should be under the care of a licensed healthcare professional. A licensed healthcare professional’s advice is required to understand the meaning and importance of wheeze rate.
If the user is feeling breathless, or experiencing other symptoms, it is important to prioritise treatment over taking a wheeze rate. Do not delay treatment. Regardless of the wheeze rate, if the user has signs and symptoms such as, but not limited to, chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, they should always follow their healthcare professional’s advice.
